Honouring Women in Science and the Arts

Honouring Women in Science and the Arts
Hayley Sieff, Jenny Saville, Dame Vivien Duffield, Dr. Leeat Keren

Thanks to the generosity of Weizmann UK’s supporters, a record £250,000 was raised at our Women in Science lunch in May. The funds raised will go towards the Weizmann Institute’s visionary programme that assists talented women scientists to progress their careers.

180 guests attended the lunch at the Design Museum which was hosted by Dr Arabella Duffield, Chair of Weizmann UK and Hayley Sieff, Weizmann UK trustee. We were privileged to be joined by two hugely gifted speakers from the worlds of art and science.

Jenny Saville RA gave us a fascinating insight into her career trajectory as a female portrait artist and demonstrated, through the rigorous lengths she went to studying anatomy, that art and science are more closely linked than we might think.

The Weizmann Institute’s Dr. Leeat Keren gave an impressive account of how she is using state-of-the-art imaging techniques to revolutionise cancer detection and treatment. Her own career story showed us just how vital the Women in Science programme is for women at the crucial post-doctoral stage of their careers.

Closing thanks were given by Weizmann UK’s newly appointed Executive Director, Carmel Spyer.

Following the lunch, guests were invited on a private tour of the Design Museum’s Ai Weiwei exhibition, Making Sense.

We are most grateful to Sotheby’s for their wonderful commitment to women in science.  To Jonathan Lourie and The Norman in Tel Aviv for their fantastic support of this event and to Terry de Gunzburg for her generosity in providing the most stunning By Terry gift bags.
