Dr. Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute

The Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) was founded in 1969 and for over five decades has brought together exceptional young students, aged 18-20, from around the world to explore their passion for science at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The highly competitive month-long programme has served as a springboard for generations of scientific and professional leaders, supporting promising students on their path to discovery.

Each year, a group of 80 students have spent three weeks living on campus and working as integral members of active research groups alongside leading Weizmann scientists. Beyond hands-on laboratory experience, students attended lectures, led their own seminars, and engaged in scientific debate, building confidence, independence, and essential research skills across fields including physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and life sciences. A programme of social and cultural activities enriched the experience, providing the opportunity to explore Israel's rich natural and cultural heritage in the Judean Desert and the Negev. 

Over its history, more than 3500 students have taken part in the programme from over 50 countries including more than 500 from the UK. The programme's exceptional alumni network spans the globe, with graduates pursuing distinguished careers in academia, industry, and research institutions worldwide. 

Unfortunately, due to the significant pressure on laboratories following the missile strike on campus, the programme will not take place in 2026. Plans remain underway to ensure that the opportunity for young people to step into the labs at the Weizmann Institute will be available to the next generation of curious minds at the point when it will be of most value in their journey towards becoming the scientists of tomorrow.
