An explosive discovery
Dr. Avishay Gal-Yam

Scientists from the Weizmann Institute with
their colleagues from around the world have
discovered a third type of exploding star, also
known as a supernova.

This discovery will give Cosmologists and Astrophysicists a greater understanding of some of the mysteries of our Universe and its components.

We are also delighted to announce that Dr. Avishay
Gal-Yam of the Weizmann Institute, who played a key
role in this discovery, will be a speaker at our Making Connections Symposium and also attending our Gala Dinner, where he will give a brief presentation on the origins of our Universe.

Stress linked to Obesity and Diabetes - Weizmann Institute Scientists discover a gene that ties stress to Obesity and Diabetes
The constant daily stress that individuals are exposed to may be taking its toll. With anxiety and metabolic disorders such as Obesity and Diabetes reaching endemic proportions, scientists have been trying to discover if there is a link between the two.

Dr. Alon Chen of the Weizmann Institute’s Neurobiology Department and his research team have now discovered that changes in the activity of a single gene in the brain does in fact link anxiety with Obesity and Diabetes.

eNoses: Smelling the future
Dr. Rafi Haddad, Prof. David Harel and their colleagues at the Institute have “trained” an electronic system to be able to predict the pleasantness of novel odours, just like a human would perceive them – dispelling the popular notion that smell is completely subjective and culture-specific.

These findings have important implications for monitoring of environmentally toxic odours, fast odour screening in the perfume industry, and will provide a critical building block for the Holy Grail of sense technology – transmitting scent digitally.

On the 23rd June, we will be hosting our second Weizmann UK Making Connections Gala Dinner at The Science Museum, London. We are excited to be joined by leading scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and their UK colleagues.

The event will offer a unique opportunity for our supporters to learn more about our Making Connections programme and to meet leading British and Israeli scientists in the fields of Astrophysics and Cosmology, who are working together to expand the horizons of our knowledge about stars, galaxies, and the laws that govern their existence.

We look forward to another Weizmann WOW!

The Cosmic Enigma: Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics Making Connections Symposium 2010
The Cosmic Enigma: Poster

Our Making Connections Symposium on the 22nd and 23rd June will provide an opportunity for scientists to present and show new research in the fields of Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics.

Leading scientists from the Weizmann Institute will be joined by colleagues from UK research institutions to discuss their latest research in Particle Physics & Astrophysics, Theoretical Cosmology, Dark Matter, Galaxy formation, and High Energy Phenomenology.
