Welcome home Dr Bessie Lawrence Summer School students 2009

30-09-2009

Our 9 fantastic A-level science students have just returned from this year’s International Summer Science programme, where they undertook challenging and exciting research projects alongside the Weizmann’s pioneering scientists.

The projects worked on by the students included ‘Exploring the association between depression and drug addiction on the behavioural and neurobiological level’, ‘Controlling the phase of light with polarization’, and ‘Synthesizing new core-shell inorganic nanotubes.’

The reports are also full of their adventures outside the labs: they made ice cream with liquid nitrogen, undertook an excursion to Jerusalem and field trips to the desert.  Other highlights from the trip were swimming in Lake Kinnaret, Israel’s largest freshwater lake, and enjoying a traditional Druze feast.

ISSI was one of the best experiences of my life’, says Sebastian Pozzo of Harrow School.  David Joseph, of Highgate School, describes it as ‘unforgettable’.  ‘My research project concerned lasers made out of fibre optical cabling’, he says.  ‘We investigated a hypothesis on the effects of the interaction between two lasers.  It was incredibly exciting!  I have also made some real friends, both from the UK and abroad.  I plan on visiting Switzerland later this year and perhaps America next year to visit them.’

Each of the students has now gone on to University, where they will be continuing their scientific studies.
