Weizmann UK is delighted to announce that its Chairman, Martin Paisner CBE, received an Honorary PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, in recognition of his longstanding support of the Institute and commitment to science and education.
The honorary doctorate ceremony took place at the Weizmann Institute Campus in Rehovot as part of the 63rd Annual General Meeting of the International Board. The presentation was made by Prof. Daniel Zaijfman, President of the Institute.
During the ceremony, Prof. Zaijfman said: “In bestowing an honorary PhD on Martin Paisner, the Weizmann Institute recognises the breadth and depth of his accomplishments in his profession of law and the widespread respect and appreciation of his community. It also recognises his close friendship for and support of the Institute over many years. Martin is a true friend who shares our commitment to science and the education of future generations of scientists.”
Upon receiving this fantastic honour, Martin said: “I am enormously proud of, and grateful for, the Honorary Doctorate which is being conferred on me today.”
As part of his speech, Martin addressed the notion of the Zionist dream noting that the Institute, in Rehovot, was very much a key part of that dream. “One had a romantic image of a place of learning and research, built amongst sand dunes and desert and born out of an ambition to turn the only real capital that the new state seemed to possess – technical skills, ingenuity, energy and desperation – to the production of miracles in scientific technology which would contribute to the future building not only of Israel but of mankind.”
Martin has a longstanding connection with the Weizmann Institute dating back to before his professional career as a solicitor when he visited the Institute as a teenager with his father. He remembers meeting Meyer Weisgal, Chaim Weizmann’s second-in-command and first Chancellor of the Institute. Martin was appointed to the Board of Weizmann UK in 1979 and became Chairman in 2009. He has remained resolute in his commitment to its values of science for the benefit of humanity and in support of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Weizmann UK is extremely grateful to all those guests who were in attendance at the ceremony to honour Martin including His Excellency Matthew Gould, UK Ambassador to Israel, Dame Vivien Duffield DBE, Arabella Duffield, Sir David Sieff, Lady Sieff, The Hon Deborah Wolfson, Barry Townsley CBE, Lady Michels, Lord and Lady Young, Allyson Kaye and Marcus Margulies. We are also extremely thankful to all those who have and continue to support Weizmann UK.
